I have an out of state class D driver's license, (a state where you have to get a special Class M endorsement for riding a motorcycle) I have been googling and found some articles that say AL is the only state where you can ride a motorcycle with just a regular driver's license. I also found some article about cops not knowing this and giving people tickets anyway. Can anyone set me straight?
I want to get an AL driver's license and get a motorcycle, but I'm wondering if i need to pass a written or skill motorcycle test. I am over 21. Also, my out of state DL is valid till 2015, so can I ride a bike with it in AL? The examination for this license is taken from the Alabama Motorcycle Operator Manual and the Alabama Driver's Manual. The license is valid for four years.' I don't believe this to be the case, as it is an endorsement on the Class D license, same as with a boat. You have to pass a written exam for either to add the endorsement to your regular class-D license or have been licensed before 1990.
Look on the back of your license below your name, Mine says (because I've taken the tests for each) Class: D-Regular Operators License, Class: M-Motorcycle, Class: V-Vessel There is a specific Class M license only for someone restricted to operating a motorcycle only also. EDIT: Those who don’t have the Class M endorsement are only legal driving a motorcycle as long as they are riding in Alabama.
